Fujifilm’s Instax cameras are one of the stunning products in the instant photography market. All of the models are funny like a toy for kids with the classic style.
Along with beautiful design patterns, these cameras have many creative modes with new features. The most well-known model is the FUJIFILM Instax Mini 90. It is not only a camera but also a looker. Do you believe it?
Design and build
Previous Fuji’s cameras do not have a mirror in front of them. When the retro trend has appeared, Fuji also has a new look. The Fujifilm Instax mini 90 Neo Classic is a great example.
This model is also a flagship unit of the FUJIFILM and it has a mature design in the Instax family. With the dual-tone plastic in the body, it makes us think that the camera has a faux leather texture. Tan and black are also traditional colors in the Instax cameras.
The Mini 90 is also attractive because it has a retro look simply. Most of the front part is taken up by a large 60-mm lens. The layout of this camera is really neat and appropriate. The front end, the flashbulb, and the power swivel are put in the top right corner of the front side. The bottom has a vertical logo.
The rear face has the viewfinder eyepiece in the left corner. A release button retains the film cartridge in the camera while the battery room is on the top of the cartridge flap.
Two monochrome digital displays have been placed on the right side (above the five buttons), providing digital handles to the camera. Also, there is a screw placement to keep a tripod or a camera stand. The print output slot is on the left. The top of the camera contains a shutter button with a hook.
As an instant camera, the build is quite small to keep and carry. The top edge has a seamless curve, which makes the design flowing and flat. The rectangular shape and the rounded edges create the Mini 90 with a refined design.
In general, I see the Fujifilm Instax Mini 90 has an operated lens, a 60-mm focal length, and a 12.7 aperture. The diameter operating of the lens is 4.72 mm, which is lower than other digital cameras. In other words, the camera has low luminance and the result photos are dark.
The misaligned viewfinder on the Mini 90 is a hard part for new users because they have to try many times (before they can get a photo they want). The shutter speed gets from 1/8” to 1/400” in normal shooting and the aperture is on f/22. These are truly stunning points in an instant camera.
The narrow viewfinder is not easy to use for starters as they have to focus on an image target point and it takes time to practice. Two viewfinders at the back of the device denote several photo modes, battery status, and used films.
The macro mode allows us to have a close point in the photo although paying attention to this mode is a little tired. The L/D button and the standing mode for lighter or darker give a compatible solution to the narrow lens. We ought to combine two different conditions – low light or bright conditions. See three modes, from the D (darker) to the L+ (lighter).
Flash is another part that you need to keep an eye on it. Your image quality has also influenced this point. The Fujifilm Instax Mini 90 enables you to set a timer and control the flash naturally.
You can adjust red eyes; fill something on the picture, and choosing no-flash options through the flash control settings. A tripod stand lens also supports the timer setting smoothly work. The Mode button provides 5 modes – Kid, Party, Landscape, Bulb Exposure, and Double Exposure, which could be chosen by changing the ring on the front face.
The first two modes give quick shutter speeds to reach moving objects or special moments at parties. The landscape mode gives the option of the exposure and the shutter speed. We can compensate those to obtain the best options in different light conditions of an outdoor area. This is a small technique that you should keep in mind.
The other two modes can adjust the shutter speed from the highest level to the lowest one for getting a better photo in the dark area and diverse characters in one print. In Bulb mode, the shutter probably keeps 10 seconds at the maximum condition and catching photos on two exposures. You will have good visual effects from the 62mm/46mm photo prints.
In indoor settings with normal lighting conditions, the Instax mini 90 Neo Classic film is impressive with spirited and bright colors. In suitable conditions, the camera can take some better photos in a similar condition in comparison with Lomography Lomo’Instant Wide as well as Fujifilm Instax Wide 300.
We should not take photos in white objects or the sunlight because we will get many overexposed images. In other words, do not use the camera to take picture packs at the beaches, even in snow and clouds. Perhaps, this is a downside of the Instax Mini 90 which you need to note down.
